Ever heard a whale sing? WCS Canada Arctic scientist Dr. Bill Halliday has listened to many hours of whale songs, grunts, murmurs and whistles. Bill uses sound to understand everything from whale movements to the impact of ship noise on marine mammal behaviour. He talks us through this work in an audio interview about how the Arctic soundscape is changing and why, and what steps WCS Canada’s research team is taking to help lower the noise level for whales. Plus, we’ve included some samples of those amazing whale sounds and what it sounds like to have a ship pass nearby in the quiet Arctic environment.
